To evaluate the toughness of aggregates to break down under application of impact and to determine aggregate impact value of the given sample of aggregate.
Impact Testing Machine, Tamping Rod, Trowel, Cylindrical Mould, Levelling Rod, Weighing Balance etc.
Toughness: is the amount of energy per unit volume that a material can absorb before rupturing.
Impact value of aggregate: is a measure of resistance to sudden impact or shock, which may differ from its resistance to gradually applied compressive load.
Take coarse aggregate in a pan and measure it to 350g using the weighing balance.
Arrange the sieves in the decreasing order of their size. Place the pan at the bottom and then add weighed quantity of coarse aggregate.
Place the set of sieves in the mechanical shaker.
Collect the coarse aggregate retained on 10mm sieve in a separate container.
Note down the empty weight cylinder W1(g). Then fill the cylinder with the aggregates retained on 10mm sieve in 4 layers.
Weight of empty cylinder (W1) = _________
Note down the weight of the cylinder along with the aggregates W2(g).
Weight of cylinder with the aggregates(W2) = _________
Place the cylinder in the setup. Release the hammer in order to apply the impact load. 15 blows are given at an interval of not less 1 seconds.
Drag and drop the screw in the position.
Transfer the aggregates to the sieve (2.36mm), then place it in the mechanical shaker.
Note down the weight of aggregate passing through 2.36mm W3(g).
Weight of aggregate passing through 2.36mm sieve (W3)= _________
